Symbolic Names Don't Define Deity

                                                   Symbolic Names Don't Define Deity

Isaiah 7:14 English Standard Version 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Parallel in Matthew 1:23.

NOTE: The name can be translated as, “God with us” or “God is with us.” It is true that God was with the Jews and Gentiles in Jesus, and Jesus himself said that if one had seen him, he had seen the Father. See John 14:9. In addition, this is a symbolic name. See 2 Corinthians 5:19 (NASB). We have to be careful. It says GOD WAS IN CHRIST, NOT GOD WAS CHRIST. Other symbolic names include Elijah: My God is Yahweh; Peter: The Rock; Bithiah: Daughter of Yahweh; Dibri: The Word, Speech, Pronunciation; Eliab: God is my Father. These names doesn't make these people God or a Messiah. God is with us INSIDE of Jesus. Furthermore, this prophecy is not directly about Jesus. In its proper context, it was about a son soon to be born possibly to Isaiah. To say that Jesus is God, because of this name, we would have to say that the child-Immanuel is also God in order to be consistent. Immanuel's birth is not supernatural. Virgin can mean young girl in general.  This event was fulfilled in Isaiah 7:8 and 7:16 around the time of Ahaz and Isaiah. Syria and Israel were in alliance against Judah. Isaiah prophesied that God will deliver the Southern Kingdom. The Immanuel child's birth will be the sign of God's victory for Judah. Likewise, about 700 years later, we see an alliance between Rome and the Jews against the followers of Christ. Christ's birth is a sign of God's victory to New Covenant believers.

Jeremiah 23:6 English Standard Version 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

NOTE: Symbolic names have to be read with caution. For example, Jerusalem is also called "The Lord our Righteousness"; Moses built an altar called "The Lord is my Banner;" and Gideon built an altar called "The Lord is Peace." This does not mean any of these things are God. Jesus is called "The Lord our Righteousness" because The Father will work his righteousness through Christ's body. Likewise, Jerusalem is called "The Lord our Righteousness" because The Father will work his righteousness through the people of the city in order to gather the nations. See Zechariah 8:23.

Jeremiah 33:16 English Standard Version 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

Exodus 17:15 English Standard Version 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner

Judges 6:24 English Standard Version 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.
