Ezekiel 42
Ezekiel
42:1-20 FELLOWSHIP AND SERVICE=When Ezekiel left the Temple building,
he was led out of the inner area, through the north inner gate, and now through
the outer area once again. Jesus wanted to show Ezekiel the rooms that were
between the Temple’s outer and inner areas. From verse 2-9, the passage talks about the Zadok priests' personal buildings for service, fellowship, and rest. In Verse 10-12, these
walls serve as boundaries from the outside world. In verses 13-20,
are similar to verses 2-9. This is the Temple platform, which elevates the building from the Earth symbolically. This architectural symbolism shows the reader that this Temple is other-world centered. It is a new order.
In regards to the Zadok priests, they get to partake in the purification and sacrificial offerings leading up to the Day of Atonement ceremony. The words west side and east side are interestingly translated with the Hebrew word Ruwach (meaning Soul/Wind). This
further reinforces the fact this is a symbolic interpretation, not a literal
one. These directions just emphasize a separation from the Holy and the common. The large number of 500 is putting a large distance from the Holy Place/Sanctuary
and the profane place (See Exodus 30:23-25). The Zadok priesthood will be known for their high standards of Holiness and purity. See Diagram 1 for a layout of the Temple.
