Genesis 5 Revisited Notes

       Genesis 5 Revisited Notes

This genealogy discusses the origins of Adam and Eve-

Covenant Mankind-The Sethite Patriarchs who are inheritors of the double portion. It doesn't prove they were made on the 6th day as traditionalists try to justify here. Seth was made in the image of Adam. Sin has marred the image of God. 1 Corinthians 15.

In the next few passages, we see a pattern of life and death. This does not confirm that physical death was brought forth because of The Fall. Otherwise, that would give Satan more credibility than God since Adam and Eve did not physically die that very day. A similar historical record can be found with the Sumerian Kings. According to these records, these kings ruled 10,000 years or more during their lifetime.

Likewise, this is why we see Adam live up to 930 years. These are not literal years, but figurative in order to describe a theological message. Luke 3 shows that some names were omitted from the Genesis 5 Genealogy, which supports my position that this is not a strict, literal genealogy. In his book,Noah's Ark and the Ziusudra Epic: Sumerian Origins of the Flood Myth, Robert M Best converted the ages of the Sethite Patriarchs. It seems an Akkadian scribe may have used a Semitic base-10 numbering system to represent the Sumerian base-60 numbering system when translating texts. This is why we see the ages as they are in scripture. When we see these numbers in our system, we can see that these men died the normal ranges of human life. See chart below.

We see Adam die at age 930 years. This is 70 years short of 1,000 years. 1000 years represent eternal life. Adam fathered other sons and daughters AFTER Seth, not BEFORE. Next, we see Seth father Enosh. This leads us back to Genesis 4:26, when the Sethites started to refer to themselves as the Sons of God.

So the big question is who did Seth marry? Seth married one of the women from the Pre-Adamic race (Gentiles), not his own sister. Therefore, the incest theory doesn't work. Those who hold to a tripartite interpretation of the law will run into a serious problem here. Incest doesn't fall into their civil or ceremonial categories, it falls under the moral law-which they claim to be rooted in God's character. If God never changes (Malachi 3:6, Numbers 23:19, Hebrews 13:8, Psalm 102:27), how can we say he was ok with incest, but then changed his mind about it?

We see a pattern of under 1,000 years, death, and name similarity between the Cainites and Sethites. The name similarity is important because it appears that the Sethites admired the Cainites' ingenuity and innovative contributions to society.

In verse 21, we are introduced to Enoch. Traditionalists tend to use Enoch as an example of someone who bypassed physical death through a pre-manifestation version of the Rapture. However, a careful reading, would demonstrate the opposite. For example, Melchizedek who was a Gentile Priest-King had no documented birthdate and deathdate. Similarly, Enoch has no documented death date- Hebrews 7:3. This is why it is claimed that Enoch didn't see death. It is believe that Lamech was accompanied with a mob of people to kill Enoch. As a result, God transported him to the Garden of Eden. He stayed there until his death according to the Book of Jubilees 4. When Lamech and the mob couldn't find him, in order to save face, Lamech claimed to have killed Enoch for offending him or physically assaulting him in Genesis 4.

After Enoch, Methuselah lived up to 969 years old. He is considered the oldest patriarch before the Flood. His death triggered the events of judgment. He brings forth Lamech (not to be confused with the Cainite with the same name) who made a prophecy about his son, Noah. Noah will be the chosen one who will bring rest to the Land curse. Lamech lives 777 years as a symbol of Hope while Cainite Lamech's 70 times 7 is about Vengeance. Lamech's justice falls short.
