Revelation 1:7 and Matthew 26:64 Connection

Revelation 1:7 and Matthew 26:64 Connection

The promise of Jesus' return is one of the most awe-inspiring themes in Scripture, tying together prophecy, fulfillment, and hope. Two passages, in particular, echo with profound unity: Revelation 1:7 and Matthew 26:64.

Together, these verses paint a vivid picture of Jesus’ divine authority and the certainty of His return in 70AD. Revelation 1:7 is a triumphant proclamation of Christ’s future glory, while Matthew 26:64 captures a moment when Jesus foretold this truth during His trial—a moment of profound courage and clarity.

In this blog, we’ll explore the connections between these two powerful scriptures and their relevance for our lives. Together, they remind us of the unshakable truth that Jesus is not only the Lamb who was slain but also the triumphant King.

Revelation 1:7 English Standard Version 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, EVEN THOSE WHO PIERCED HIM, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Revelation 1:7 Darby Translation Behold, he comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they which have pierced him, and all the tribes of the land shall wail because of him. Yea. Amen.

Revelation 1:7 Young's Literal Translation Lo, he doth come with the clouds, and see him shall every eye, even those who did pierce him, and wail because of him shall all the tribes of the land. Yes! Amen!

This is a reference from Zechariah 12:10 used in a localized way. I believe Revelation 1:7 is referring to the events of 70AD. It is the end of the Jewish world, not our world. The Temple was destroyed. Even Darby's translation and Young's Literal translation says land instead of earth. That's a huge difference in interpretation.

A Jew knew "the land" meant their near by region- Jerusalem and other neighbors. The modern world is not identified as tribes either. The Jews reading knew that it referred to the 12 tribes. The high priest in Matthew 26:64 was going to SEE Jesus execute judgment. Therefore, Revelation had to be written when the 12 tribes were still identifiable in the Old covenant.

Before Darby, the Church believed in an early date of Revelation (before 70AD). Now, the late date is popular. However, a lot of people forget about the Bar Kochba Revolt 132AD and try to ignore it or downplay it because the end of the world books sell.

There are three common Greek words that can be used for Earth/World: Ge, Kosmos, and Oikoumene. Kosmos can refer to civilization or society, not the actual cosmos what many pastors teach in error. See John 12:19. This does not include the Han Dynasty in China, the Funan kingdom in Cambodia, and the Moche culture in the Americas.

Oikumene is the countries under the jurisdiction of Rome. See Luke 2:1. This does not include Han Dynasty in China, the Funan kingdom in Cambodia, and the Moche culture in the Americas. They were not part of the census.

Revelation 1:7 uses Ge which means local and regions around Jerusalem.

Ge is also used in the following: Matthew 2:6, 2:21, 10:15, 14:34, 27:45. As you can see, they are all local areas.

Every eye doesn't mean the entire modern world. It means the inhabitants of the first century Greco-Roman world, which included the Jews (especially the ones that crucified Jesus) and Romans. We can see similar language in Isaiah 19.

Isaiah 19:1 English Standard Version 19 An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift CLOUD and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.

Note: Cloud language is figurative for judgment in the Old Testament. The same cloud language is used in Revelation as well. All the countries in the world did not see God when he brought judgment on Egypt, so why do we make the same mistake with Revelation?

John 21:22
New International Version
22 Jesus answered, “If I want HIM to remain alive UNTIL I RETURN, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

Note: Jesus was supposed to come during John the Apostle's lifetime.

Matthew 26:64
English Standard Version
64 Jesus said to him, “YOU have said so. But I tell YOU, from now on YOU will SEE the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Note: The high priest will see it in his lifetime. Otherwise, Jesus was in error.

Matthew 19:28
English Standard Version
28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, JUDGING THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL.

Note: Judging the 12 tribes, not the entire world.

Matthew 10:23
English Standard Version
23 When they persecute YOU in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to YOU, YOU will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Note: The YOU is the apostles that's who he was talking to directly.

Luke 22:28-30 English Standard Version 28 “YOU are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to YOU, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that YOU may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones JUDGING THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL.

Note: The YOU refers to the Apostles. Again this Judgment is on the 12 Tribes of Israel. Not the ENTIRE WORLD/EARTH.

Historical proofs

A certain figure appeared of tremendous size, which many saw, just as the books of the Jews have disclosed, and before the setting of the sun there were suddenly seen in the clouds chariots and armed battle arrays, by which the cities of all Iudaea and its territories were invaded.
— Pseudo-Hegesippus

A phantom appeared of incredible size, and what will be related would have seemed a fairy-tale had it not been told by those who saw it, and been attended by suffering worthy of the portent. For before sunset there appeared in the air over the whole country chariots and armed troops coursing through the clouds and surrounding the cities.
— Eusebius of Caesarea

…chariots and troops of soldiers in their armor were seen running about among the clouds, and surrounding of cities.
— Flavius Josephus

There had been seen hosts joining battle in the skies, fiery gleams of arms… the temple illuminated by a sudden radiance from the clouds.
— Gaius Tacitus

Now it happened after this that there was seen over the Holy of Holies from above for the entire night the outline of a man’s face, the like of whose beauty had never been seen in all the land, and his appearance was very awesome. Moreover, in those days were seen chariots of fire and horsemen, a great force flying across the sky near to the ground coming against Jerusalem and all the land of Judah, all of them horses of fire and riders of fire.
— Sepher Josippon
