Why the Seven Year Tribulation is not Possible According to Scripture
***All these
texts show that Jesus used Old Testament Hyperbole to describe a series of
conflicting events, not a Seven Year Tribulation. Look below starting on
Matthew 24. Notice the similar phrasing and how each one is an exaggeration
according to its own context***
- Matthew 24:21-For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. NOTE: Dispensationalism misapplies this verse to a 7 year Tribulation.
- Daniel 9:12- He has confirmed his words, which he
spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing
upon us a great calamity. For
under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done
against Jerusalem.
- Daniel
12:1-“Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons
of your people, will arise. And there
will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation
until that time.
- Ezekiel 5:9- And because of all your abominations I will do with you what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again. NOTE: This context is associated with the exile/captivity, not a 7 year Tribulation.
- Exodus 10:4-6 - For if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, and they shall cover the face of the land, so that no one can see the land. And they shall eat what is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field, and they shall fill your houses and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.’” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh. NOTE: This context is associated with the Passover/Exodus, not a 7 year Tribulation.
- Exodus 11:6 “There
shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again”
- Exodus 9:18 “Behold,
about this time tomorrow, I will send a very heavy hail, such as has not been seen in Egypt from the
day it was founded until now”
- 2 Kings 18:5- He (Hezekiah) trusted in the Lord,
the God of Israel, so that there
was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who
were before him.NOTE: This is figurative because Josiah was a better King after Hezekiah.
- 2 Kings 23:25
“And before him [Josiah] there was no
king like him who turned to the Lord will all his heart and with all his soul
and with all his might, according to the law of Moses; nor did any like arise after him”NOTE: This is figurative because Jesus is the better King.
- 1 Kings 3:12-behold, I now do according to your
word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and
none like you shall arise after you.
- Joel 1:2-Hear this, you elders; give ear, all
inhabitants of the land! Has such a
thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
- Joel 2:2……a
day of darkness and gloom, a
day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness
there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been before, nor will be
again after them through the years of all generations.
- Ezekiel 16:16 You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful shrines, and on them played the whore. The like has never been, nor ever shall be.
Hyperbole of Political Disasters/Judgment
Babylon- Isaiah 13:10-13 For the stars of the heavens and
their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its
rising, and the moon will not shed its light. I will punish the world for its
evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the
arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless. I will make people
more rare than fine gold, and mankind than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,
and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of the Lord of
hosts in the day of his fierce anger.

Edom - Isaiah 34:4-6 All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree. For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction. The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood; it is gorged with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

Humanity and the Elect-Isaiah 51:5-6- My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands hope for me, and for my arm they wait. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

Judah-Jeremiah 4:1-6: “If you return, O Israel, declares the Lord, to me you should return. If you remove your detestable things from my presence, and do not waver, and if you swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.” For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds.” Disaster from the North Declare in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say, “Blow the trumpet through the land; cry aloud and say, ‘Assemble, and let us go into the fortified cities!’ Raise a standard toward Zion, flee for safety, stay not, for I bring disaster from the north, and great destruction.

Jeremiah 4:23-28: I looked on the earth, and behold,
it was without form and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and behold, they
were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and behold, there was no man, and
all the birds of the air had fled. I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was
a desert, and all its cities were laid in ruins before the Lord, before his
fierce anger. For thus says the Lord,
“The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end. “For this the earth shall mourn, and the
heavens above be dark; for I have spoken; I have purposed; I have not relented,
nor will I turn back.”

Jerusalem- Zephaniah 1:7 Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is near; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests.

Egypt- Ezekiel 32:7-8: When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens and make their stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and put darkness on your land, declares the Lord God.
Isaiah 19:1 An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
NOTE: Fulfilled in 480 BC
The Nations/Gentiles- Joel 3:15-16 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.

Nineveh- Nahum 1:1-5-An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh. God's Wrath Against Nineveh The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.

Israel- Amos 8:1-2 & 9- This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. And he said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass by them…..“And on that day,” declares the Lord God, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.

Psalm 18 The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said: 18 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. ***In conclusion, none of these events demonstrate a literal end times darkness and stars falling from the sky. It is figurative/hyperbolic descriptions of an event. ***

2 Samuel 22 David's Song of Deliverance 22 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 5 “For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me; 6 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 7 “In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears. 8 “Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 10 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 11 He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind. 12 He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. 13 Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. 14 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. 15 And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them. 16 Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17 “He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 18 He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 21 “The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. 26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. 29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. 30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33 This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. 34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great. 37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. 39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. 40 For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. 41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. 42 They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. 43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. 44 “You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. 45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. 46 Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses. 47 “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, 49 who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence. 50 “For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 51 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.”
***In conclusion, none of these events demonstrate a literal end times darkness and stars falling from the sky. It is figurative/hyperbolic descriptions of an event. ***
