Ezekiel 38-39 has been fulfilled in the book of Esther-Quick Reference

***The Jews’ victory caused 75,310 people (Esther 9:10, 15, 16). This corresponds with the enemy deaths in Ezekiel 38-39.

They killed seventy-five thousand of them but did not lay their hands on the plunder.

Sheshbazzar brought all these along with the exiles when they came up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

·         Ezekiel 38:10-13 10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme. 11 You will say, “I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars. 12 I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the RESETTLED RUINS and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land.” 13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all her villages will say to you, Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?”

***A multitude of Gentiles attacked the Jews
·         Esther 1:1 1 This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.

·         Esther 3:12-14 12 Then the king's scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king's satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the officials of all the peoples, to every province in its own script and every people in its own language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's signet ring. 13 Letters were sent by couriers to all the king's provinces with instruction to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods. 14 A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province by proclamation to all the peoples to be ready for that day.

·         Esther 8:9 9 At once the royal secretaries were summoned—on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan. They wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush. These orders were written in the script of each province and the language of each people and also to the Jews in their own script and language.

·         Ezekiel 38:1-6  38 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him 3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. 5 Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, 6 also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you.

***Prince Haman is the Chief Prince and his name means Multitude in Hebrew
·         Esther 3:1 3 After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

·         Esther 3:12 12 Then were the king's scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring.

·         Esther 5:11 11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

·         Ezekiel 38:2-3 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him 3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal.

·         Ezekiel 39:1 39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal.

·         Ezekiel 39:11 11 “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried there. So it will be called the Valley of HAMON Gog.

·         Ezekiel 39:15-16 15 As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of HAMON Gog, 16 near a town called Hamonah. And so they will cleanse the land.’

***Haman is an Agagite/Amalekite/Gogite- The Battle between Israel and the Amalekites
·         Esther 3:1 3 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.

·         Esther 3:10 10 So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

·         Esther 8:3 3 Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.

·         Esther 8:5 5 “If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if he regards me with favor and thinks it the right thing to do, and if he is pleased with me, let an order be written overruling the dispatches that Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.

·         Esther 9:24 24 For Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast the pur (that is, the lot) for their ruin and destruction

·         Ezekiel 38:17 17 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. (SEE BELOW FOR SUPPORT)

·         1 Samuel 15:8 8 He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.

·         Exodus 17:15-16 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

·         Deuteronomy 25:17-19 17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God. 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!

·         Numbers 24:7, 20 7 Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water. “Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted...20 Then Balaam saw Amalek and spoke his message: “Amalek was first among the nations, but their end will be utter destruction.”
NOTE: The Amalekites were descendants of Magog, the son of Japheth. Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Beth-togarmah, Tarshish, and Gomer are all Japhethite nations from Genesis 10:2-4. Cush, Put, Sheba, and Dedan are Hamite peoples from Genesis 10:6-7. We see the nations attacking the true remnant of the Shemites just like we see Amalek going against Israel.(See below).
·

  •       Genesis 10:2-4 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites.

  •          Genesis 10:6-7 6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

***The Battle of Ezekiel occurs when Jerusalem and the other towns still had NO WALLS.

·         Esther 9:19 19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

·         Ezekiel 38:11 11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

NOTE: This rules out any future events. Jerusalem had no walls until Nehemiah rebuilt them. However, at this point in Esther's story, no walls have been built yet. The project has not started at this point.

***An Evil Plan

  • Esther 8:3 3 Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews.

  • Esther 9:25 25 But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing that his evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

  • Ezekiel 38:10 10 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme

***The Enemies are located on the Coastlands of the Sea.

  • Esther 10:1 10 King Ahasuerus imposed tax on the land and on the coastlands of the sea.

  • Ezekiel 39:6 6 I will send fire on Magog and on those who dwell securely in the coastlands, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

***Conversion of the Gentiles

  • Esther 8:17 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

  • Esther 9:3-4 3 All the officials of the provinces and the satraps and the governors and the royal agents also helped the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew more and more powerful.

  • Esther 10:1-3 1 King Ahasuerus imposed tax on the land and on the coastlands of the sea. 2 And all the acts of his power and might, and the full account of the high honor of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia? 3 For Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to all his people.

  • Ezekiel 38:21-23 21 I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord God. Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22 With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. 23 So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

***Disarming of Enemy Nations

  • Esther 9:2 2 The Jews gathered in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could stand against them, for the fear of them had fallen on all peoples.

  • Ezekiel 39:3 3 Then I will strike your bow from your left hand, and will make your arrows drop out of your right hand.

***The Pouring of the Spirit

  • Ezekiel 39:28 28 Then they shall know that I am the LORD their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore. 29 And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord GOD.”

  • Isaiah 32:14-15 14 For the palace is forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks; 15 until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.

  • Isaiah 44:3 3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

  • Zechariah 12:10 10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

  • Joel 2:28-32/Acts 2:17-21“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.  “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.  The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

NOTE: This indicates a past fulfillment since this is a New Covenant Phrase.

***Israel respected and God’s Glory acknowledged
·         Esther 8:17 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them

·         Esther 9:3-4 3 All the officials of the provinces and the satraps and the governors and the royal agents also helped the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew more and more powerful.

·         Esther 10 1 King Ahasuerus imposed tax on the land and on the coastlands of the sea.

·         Ezekiel 39:21, 23 21 “And I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid on them. 23 And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt so treacherously with me that I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword.

·         Ezekiel 39:27 27 when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies' lands, and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations.

·         Isaiah 40:5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

·         Isaiah 66:18-21 18 “For I know their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

NOTE: This is New Covenant talk.

 ***************ADDITIONAL NOTES**********************************************

·         The seven years can be interpreted as the number of weapons of the enemy and those who switched to the Jews’ side. The seven years is the time used to burn the weapons of the enemy/converted Gentiles. This symbolizes peace and deliverance from genocide. Also, Isaiah 40:16 and Leviticus 6:13 helps the reader see that the fuel was needed to reestablish Jewish religion since they just returned to their land in order to build the Temple (See Ezra 3-The first thing to be rebuilt was the altar and it needed fuel to keep things going). Also see Nehemiah 10:34, 13:31.
       eh
Isaiah 40:16 Lebanon would not suffice for fuel, nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering.

Leviticus 6:13 Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out.

In Ezekiel 39:12-16, the seven months is the time from Purim till the Feast of Tabernacles when cleansing waters are made with the ashes of the heifer. This is for the purification process due to the exposure of the large piles of dead bodies. Numbers 19:11- 11 “Whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean seven days.

·         During this time, Israel is divided into the tribes (Ezekiel 37:19). This removes any future interpretation since all the tribes are mixed up now. Notice there is no chapter breaks in the original manuscripts, so there is no indication or basis to say that Ezekiel 38-39 occurs during the far future (2,000 years plus).

·         During this time, the enemy uses horses (Ezekiel 38:15), swords (Ezekiel 38:4) arrows, bows, war clubs (Ezekiel 39:9), and wooden weapons (Ezekiel 39:10). Again, there is no indication or basis for a far future interpretation. These are ancient weapons.

·         In Esther, the fighting occurs in every province. In Ezekiel 38-39 we see a focus on Israel, but Ezekiel indicates that "all the nations will see the punishment" (Ezekiel 39:21) and God will "send fire on Magog and on those who live in safety in the coastlands" (Ezekiel 39:6). So both passages portray fighting universally, and not just in Israel. We see this in Ezekiel 37 and 40-48. It describes a physical reality figuratively.
