How the Angels in 2 Peter and Jude are linked to Korah’s Rebellion



There have been various interpretations in regards to the angels of 2 Peter and Jude. Many have tried to force a connection with the Nephilim in Genesis 6. This is incorrect. These so-called Nephilim passages are questionable. Therefore, they should not be presupposed upon 2 Peter and Jude. Below, we can see how Malachi 2:7 refers to the Levites as messengers of God. Messengers and angel are used interchangeably in the Bible depending on its context.

·         Malachi 2:7 English Standard Version 7 For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.

 

·         NOTE: The Hebrew word- Malak is also used for the Angel of the Lord (Genesis 16) and the two angels who go out to Sodom & Gomorrah (Genesis 19). As we can see, Korah and his allies were Levites pretending to be priest and usurp the positions of Moses and Aaron. The Greek word aggelos functions in a similar manner.

 

·         2 Peter 2:4 English Standard Version 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment

 

·         Jude 6 English Standard Version 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day

 

·         NOTE: Notice the context in verse 5 in Jude is about the Exodus.

 

·         Numbers 16:1 English Standard Version 16 Now Korah the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men.

·         Numbers 16:30-34 English Standard Version 30 But if the Lord creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down ALIVE into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.” 31 And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart. 32 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down ALIVE into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. 34 And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

 

The Proper Reading of Both Passages

2 Peter 2:4 English Standard Version 4 For if God did not spare the Levites when they sinned, but cast them into Sheol and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

Jude 6 English Standard Version 6 And the Levites who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left the House of God, he (God) has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day
