       Genesis 2 Revisited Notes

The seventh day consisted of God finishing the act of direct creation. His rest is not from exhaustion, but of completion and the establishment of His rulership. Notice, that Day 7 doesn't mention the morning and evening phrase. This doesn't mean there wasn't a literal end of the day. This is a figurative way of saying that God's rest never ends. This concept of rest is fully developed in Hebrews 4. In Genesis 2:4, we have the famous Toledot, this is where people traditionally say that Genesis 1's Day 6 is being unpacked in a more detailed manner. This is incorrect. Toledots are never used to explain a previous event, only subsequent events. Therefore, Adam the covenant man is born into God's 7th day rest-the unofficial 8th day. The Covenant name Yahweh is used to indicate a closer relationship with the Man-Adam.

 God created Adam indirectly through rain clouds falling on the Land of Eden. The Genealogy has the Heavens and Earth as the Father and Mother of Adam (and later Eve). He has a unique birth just like Christ. He is the man of clay-A son of the soil. The bush and vegetation refers to God planting a Garden in the Land of Eden. At this point, the Land of Eden is a barren,  wilderness with little irrigation-seasonal rains upon the land.



Adam is taken on the unofficial 8th day to serve as God's priest-king in the new, Edenic Temple. This reflects how it took Solomon 7 years to build the Jewish Temple. Similarly, the 8th day also reflects how Aaron and his sons' were officiated as priests. Once in the garden, Adam was responsible for its maintenance and protection similar to how the priests were to protect the Temple from unclean things. The Garden of Eden represented the Holy Place while the two trees: the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the Tree of Life, served as the Holy of Holies. The outer court was outside the garden for the nations. The Woman and Adam entered them in a transgressing manner- before the appointed time. Based on the location of the four rivers the Land of Eden was located on a mountain like Sinai, Moriah, and ultimately Zion. The jewels mentioned in chapter 2 represent Adam's responsibility to interact with the nations like how Solomon was involved with trading and mining. Solomon used jewels to decorate the Temple. Likewise, Adam would have used these jewels to decorate the Garden of Eden. This trading relationship would resulted in bringing the nations to the Garden of Eden. This would have result in them bringing the knowledge of God back into their native land.


God gives Adam the command to eat all trees except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The Hebrew words are very expansive-tob and ra respectively. It can be prosperity/adversity or functional/dysfunctional. Covenant mankind in the garden was only exposed to God's goodness: prosperity/functionality. Never his righteous judgment. The fruit revealed a higher consciousness of disorder within themselves and outside of the garden. This can also be related to the events of Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim: Blessings and Cursings.



The scene then transitions to God recognizing Adam's need for a helper. He then makes The Woman (Eve) in order for both to count the animals together. This indicates that both the man and the woman had equal dominion pre-fall. 


Adam is placed in the Tardemah sleep. This supernatural sleep  episode can also be associated with Noah, Abraham, and King Saul. This involved the making of a covenant-splitting imagery. It is debated if God really took one of Adam's ribs or a piece of his skin/ torso or even his DNA. All three are possible. Adam then sings his song of love/joy for the creation of the woman farmer. Adam's father and mother in this context is the Heavens (rain/seed) and the Earth (land/womb) he left the outside land to enter the Garden of Eden to marry the covenant woman. This is the first royal wedding-King and Queen. Not the first ever wedding.

Revelation 12 V1-2: We see the same imagery of Joseph’s dream here in Genesis 37:9-11.
