How Apocalyptic Imagery is Used in the Bible

Genesis 1:16 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to RULE the day and the lesser light to RULE the night—and the stars.

NOTE: We see the sun and moon “govern/rule” over the day and the night.

Genesis 37:9- 9 Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

NOTE: The Sun: Jacob (Leader), The Moon-(Jacob’s wives/servants/mothers), The Stars: (Twelve Brothers/Tribes). The sun, moon, and starts represent authority/place of prominence because they give light over all of Jerusalem. When Jesus talks about the sun, moon, and stars diming and crashing down, He is talking about the end of the Jewish Leadership/Pharisaic Regime/Old Covenant Religion. The same can be said about New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:23 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The new leadership is God the Father and Jesus in the New Covenant. A human king/prince is no longer needed as a “sun and moon”.

For example, John 11:48-48: If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

NOTE: How does a physical moon be confounded and a physical sun feels shame? They represent the leadership of Israel.

Revelation 12 12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. 3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. 5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, 6 and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 day

NOTE: The Sun and Moon-National Israel clothed as an Authoritative and Religious Figure,  Stars-Angels (see Revelation 12:9 for support of this context)

Daniel 8:9-12 9 Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the glorious land. 10 It grew great, even to the host of heaven. And some of the host and some of the stars it threw down to the ground and trampled on them. 11 It became great, even as great as the Prince of the host. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper.

NOTE: The Stars in this context are the faithful remnant of the Tribes of Israel

Matthew 24:29-“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken

Mark 13:24-25 24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

Luke 21:25 25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Joel 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.

Acts 2:20 The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

Revelation 8:12 Then the fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun and moon and stars were struck. A third of the stars were darkened, a third of the day was without light, and a third of the night as well.

NOTE: Peter quotes Joel 2:31 as occurring at that very time span: The Pentecost and the coming Judgment of 70AD (not a judgment coming 2,000 years later). In Revelation 8:12, we see a third of the sun, moon, and stars struck with judgment. This doesn’t make sense if this is interpreted as a physical sun, moon, and stars.

Isaiah 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Zechariah 14 14 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

Isaiah 19:1  An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.

NOTE:  Fulfilled in 480 BC

Matthew 26:64-65 64 Jesus said to him, “YOU have said so. But I tell you, from now on YOU will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.

Daniel 7:13-14 13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

NOTE: Notice that the same imagery is used in Isaiah 19:1. Again, if it is figurative in Isaiah 19, then it should be figurative in Matthew 26:64-65. Also, notice it was directed to the Pharisaical Jewish Leadership seeing Christ on the Clouds. That’s why Caiaphas ripped his robes because it was going to occur during his lifetime (70AD). Otherwise, Caiaphas would have smirked, laughed, and chalked Jesus up as crazy if this was going to happen 2,000 years later. Or seen this as a weak “scare tactic” to keep him on his toes. Jesus would not make an empty bluff like this.

Isaiah 34:4 4 All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.

Revelation 6:12-14 And when I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind.The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

NOTE: Notice that Isaiah 34 and Revelation 6 uses the same phraseology. Isaiah 34 focused on the local judgment of Edom and was fulfilled before 400 BC. The skies did not literally rolled up like a scroll. If figurative language is used for judgment in Isaiah 34, then it must be used in Revelation 6 as well. Let scripture interpret scripture.

A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said: 18 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. 7 Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 8 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 9 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 10 He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water. 12 Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds. 13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. 14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings and routed them. 15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 20 The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 22 For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. 23 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. 24 So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. 25 With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 26 with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 27 For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. 28 For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. 29 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 31 For who is God, but the Lord? NOTE: Notice that Psalm 18 and 2 Samuel 2:22 uses apocalyptic imagery just to talk about David’s deliverance from Saul.

In conclusion, when God is telling his readers that the Sun, Moon, and Stars will dim out and fall to the ground, He is basically telling Israel: “I’m going to knock your lights out”.
