Jesus and Naboth


Both Men Owned a Vineyard

·         1 Kings 21 1 Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria

 

·         Isaiah 5:7 1 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!  See also Matthew 21:33.

 

Both Men Didn’t Compromise Their Respective Inheritance

·         1 Kings 21 3 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”

 

·         Matthew 4:8-10 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’



Both Their Enemies Were Fueled by Envy and Greed

·         1 Kings 21:3-4 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.” 4 And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food.

 

·         Luke 16:14  14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. See also John 12:43.


Both Men Were Betrayed at a Dinner with So-Called Friends

·     1 Kings 21: 8-10 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. 9 And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. 10 And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying,

‘You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”


·   Matthew 26:23 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. See also Psalm 41:9.


Both Were Falsely Accused for Insulting God’s Name and Its Political Leadership


·    1 Kings 21: 13 -14 13 And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.”


·      John 19:7 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” See also Luke 23:2

 



Both Enemies Used Others to Murder for Them-Ahab (Jew) Used Jezebel (Gentile) for Naboth’s Death Just like the Jews Used the Romans for Jesus’s Death



·        1 Kings 21:7 7 And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”



·        Matthew 27:24 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves.”

 


Both Were Killed Outside the City

·      1 Kings 21: 13 -14 13 And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.”


·        Hebrews 13:11-14 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come


After Both Men Died, Judgment Happened to Their Enemies


·       1 Kings 21:19, 23-24 19 And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”…… 23 And of Jezebel the Lord also said, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the walls of Jezreel.’ 24 Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.”


·       Luke 23:28-30 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ See also Matthew 27:24.

Revelation 12 V1-2: We see the same imagery of Joseph’s dream here in Genesis 37:9-11. Israel (representing Jerusalem as well in Matthew 2:18) is described as the Daughter of Zion-a dying mother; specifically, Rachel who died tragically during pregnancy.
