Zechariah 12:1-9 Verse by Verse Commentary

Zechariah 12:1-9-RSV or Douay Rheims

NOTE: The RSV and Douay-Rheims translation were used because it fits the context of Isaiah 3-4 (specifically 3:5). The other translations seem inconsistent and cause tons of confusion to the events of 70AD.

Verse 1=Israel (Northern Kingdom) does not exist at this point. This is a symbolic description of Spiritual Israel-Christians. No Northern Tribes are mentioned because the Church is Idol-less now. Remember ALL the Northern Kings were wicked.

Verse 2-3=The first mention of Jerusalem is the Church. The second mention is the City of Jerusalem under siege in 70 AD.  God will protect His Church from the Nations that will try to attack it. When they attack the Church, they mark themselves for judgment. See Revelation 11:5-6, 17:14, 19:11-21. The Beast and the Ten Jewish Governors made war on the Lamb by fighting against God’s Will, not honoring Christ’s New Covenant, persecuting/killing the Elect, keeping the Old Covenant or mixing it with Roman Emperor worship, and fighting against the Romans’ authority.

We must read the “Nations” with Revelation 17, 18, and 19 for context. Otherwise, the interpretation becomes very difficult. Judah represents the poor, despised social outcasts. Appropriately, it may be safe to say that Judah can be both the poor and the Zealots (from the 3 factions, not the Judean Provisional Government/10 Horns). The Whore of Babylon/Jerusalem was rich. See Isaiah 3:5-Isaiah 4 for civil war imagery.

In Revelation 17, the Beast consisted of 7+1 Heads (Roman Emperors) and 10 Horns (Judean Provisional Governors).Since Israel and Rome are still married until death, it is best to see “The Nations” as Rome and Israel combined (Daniel 2:43-ESV, Revelation 17:1-2).

Verse 4-5=Here we see the judgments of Revelation affecting the Zealots (3 Factions-Apostate Judah) and Romans. The Lord struck them with madness because as we seen in history the Jews and Romans turned against each other. Also, notice that the Lord will not strike down the weak and improvised Jews-The Elect within Apostate Judah (This may or may not include the 144,000-they are social outcasts since they reside within the 10 Lost Tribes-considered Gentiles to the Jews in Judea/Jerusalem). God knows how to separate the Sheep from the Goats. There appears to be a conversion within Judah itself. This is a figurative description that the Lord has saved a remnant out of Apostate Judah as well. Most if not all of the Jewish Elect were out of Jerusalem already. This can be a figurative description of the entire situation. If we try to force this text with a wooden interpretation and timeline, we will confuse ourselves as well as miss the bigger picture. Verse 6=The remnant of Apostate Judah (The 144,000/the social outcasts elect) will be untouchable. Their presence will be a form of judgment on the Roman-Israel alliance. The Clay (Jews) will be burned off the Iron (Romans). Spiritual Israel/The Church will be God’s new chosen people/bride.

Verse 7=Judah here represents the weak, poor social outcasts. The Lord changes the weak (live in tents) first before Jerusalem (The strong-lives in city with walls). Again, it can apply to the 144,000, but it is not limited to them. It is true that they were converted to create a New Jewish Christian Israel in order to graft in the Gentiles according to Romans 11. Also, it can mean that the Lord works through his weakest people first.

Verse 8 =In that time period, the Elect will receive the benefits of the New Covenant. They will have a glorified body that can go straight to Heaven after death (not Sheol-bound anymore). Also, they are positionally holy in Christ. We resemble the light of Christ in a dying world. This is what it means to be changed in 1 Corinthians 15:50-58.

Verse 9=This was fulfilled in Revelation 19:11-21. The Apostate Jews will be ultimately destroyed since they continued to attack the Church.

Revelation 12 V1-2: We see the same imagery of Joseph’s dream here in Genesis 37:9-11. Israel is described as the Daughter of Zion-a dying mother; specifically, Rachel who died tragically during pregnancy. See Isaiah 50:1, 54:1-6, 66:7; Jeremiah 4:31; Micah 4:9-10; Galatians 4:27; Jeremiah 31:15; Matthew 2:18.
