                            Nephilim, the Sons of God, and Morning Stars are NOT Angels

Genesis 6:1-4 English Standard Version 6 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. 5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

 NOTE 1: Read the Angels in Hades blog before reading this blog. This will remove the faulty interpretation of 2 Peter and Jude.

NOTE 2: There is no basis for the angel theory. The Sons of God were the name of the Old Covenant chosen people before they reached the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 32:8). The angel theory is a presuppositional reading based on its usage in the Book of Job. Unfortunately, the erroneous interpretation of Job (also in 2 Peter and Jude) is read back into Genesis. The usage in Job is in itself questionable.

NOTE 3: Notice there is two Enochs (Genesis 4:17, 5:18) and two Lamechs (Genesis 4:19; 5:28). We see the line of Seth imitating the line of Cain. Other names like Irad and Jared and Methushael and Methuselah sound similar. This make sense because the Line of Cain were more technologically advanced and well-cultured than the Line of Seth (Genesis 4:17-25). This strengthens the idea that the Line of Seth intermarried into the Line of Cain in order to have access to valuable resources.

NOTE 4: The Nephilim are the children of the intermarriage between the Line of Seth and Cain. Nephilim means “Fallen Ones.” It is from the Hebrew word “naphal.” When we think of the Fall, we should think of the Curse as well. I do not believe it is farfetched to think of the Nephilim as the “Cursed Ones.” In Genesis 6:4, it says that the Nephilim existed even after the Flood. We see that this is possible when we look at Numbers 13:33. It cannot be proven if these were actually Nephilim or just an exaggeration. Either way, the Sons of Anak were from the line of Canaan. This makes sense when we see this post-diluvian, the only person to be cursed was Canaan. This was due to Ham uncovering Noah’s nakedness. The reason Canaan was cursed is because in scripture, a blessing cannot be reversed into a curse. So since Ham was already blessed by Noah in the early parts of Genesis 9, it makes sense why Canaan was cursed. Also, it is possible that he was involved as an accomplice why Noah was sleeping. Similar examples can be found below:

·         Balaam could not curse Israel because God blessed them (Numbers 22:36-24:25)

·         Although Joseph was upset with Jacob, Jacob could not reverse the blessing on Manasseh and Ephraim (Genesis 48:13-19)

·         Esau couldn’t get his birthright back from Jacob (Genesis 27:36)

 

Another popular passage that is read incorrectly is Job 1:6, 2:1 and Job 38:6-7. Readers tend to view the “Sons of God/Morning Stars” as angelic beings. There is no evidence for this interpretation.

·         Job 1:6 English Standard Version 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

 

·         Job 2:1 English Standard Version Satan Attacks Job's 2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.

 

·         Job 38:6-7 English Standard Version 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

NOTE 1: One of the things to consider is that when we compare Job 1-2 with the rest of scripture. We have many missing elements. First, there is no mention of God sitting on his throne (1 Kings 22:19-23 , Isaiah 6:1, Psalm 47:8, Revelation 4:10), the people being under God’s feet (Exodus 24:9-10), and/or the Lord is standing in Heaven (Amos 9:1, Acts 7:55). Therefore, there is no indication that Job 1-2 is occuring in Heaven. Despite the Edomites having a plethora of false gods, it is possible that a small number of Edomites gathered to Mt Seir/Paran for the worship of Yahweh (Ezekiel 35:15, Deuteronomy 33:2, Judges 5:4-8). It was normative that an assembly would gather in God’s presence similar to the Hebrews (Deuteronomy 4:10, 31:11; Joshua 24:1; Numbers 8:9, Psalm 50:5). Alternatively, Job and his friends might have went to worship with the Hebrews at a particular rendezvous point. This might have been a common occurrence.

Second, as mentioned above, the Sons of God is a name given to Israel before they reached the Promise Land (Deuteronomy 32:8). It is to identify them as God’s own covenant people.

Third, the presence of Satan does not indicate that this event occurred in Heaven. The word Earth is synonymous with the land in the Hebrew and Greek languages (1 Chronicles 21:1).

Fourth, angels are mentioned in Job 4:18. The Hebrew word is Malak. It is not the same word used in Job 1-2.

NOTE 2: Job 38:6-7 uses both terms: Sons of God and Morning Stars. Morning Stars can be identified as leaders (Isaiah 14:12-King of Babylon and Revelation 22:16-Jesus) or laymen (Genesis 37:9; Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43; Revelation 2:28-12 Tribes and New Covenant believers). A Morning Star functions as a light bearer, messenger to the darkness, and a governor of light. Furthermore, they reveal, discern, provide safety, give insight, illuminate, and bring transparency to all matters. With this information in mind, the context of Job 38:6-7 makes sense post-diluvian, not the beginning of creation in Genesis 1 (Adam was the only one alive after creation. How can he sing?). After the judgment of the wicked, Noah and his family were established as the light bearers/leaders of the new world.  It is possible they sang and rejoice once all the water dissolved.  The critic would then say what about Ham, he defied his father? Just like Ham, the King of Babylon-Nebuchadnezzar was a wicked ruler who was considered a light bearer to the Jews and the rest of his Kingdom in Isaiah 14:12.
