Michael The Archangel is Daniel 11’s Prince of the Covenant

                 Michael The Archangel is Daniel 11’s Prince of the Covenant

Daniel 11’s Prince of the Covenant is one of the most hotly debated characters in the Bible. Historically, people have claimed it to be Onias III-the High Priest during this time period. However, the High Priest is never described as the Prince of the Covenant in scripture. It gets even more problematic when the Prince is called the “The Prince of Princes” in Daniel 8. In this blog, I proposed various proofs including on how the Hebrew word for “ONE” should be translated as “FIRST” in Daniel 10:13. Hence, resolving the problem of the mysterious Prince of the Covenant.

Daniel 11:21-22 English Standard Version 21 In his place shall arise a contemptible person to whom royal majesty has not been given. He shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. 22 Armies shall be utterly swept away before him and broken, even the prince of the covenant.

NOTE: Although both princes are defeated in this text, the Prince of the Covenant is not the same Prince in Daniel 9. Daniel 9’s Prince is Jesus. In this case, it would be anachronistic.

Daniel 8:9-14 English Standard Version 9 Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the glorious land. 10 It grew great, even to the host of heaven. And some of the host and some of the stars it threw down to the ground and trampled on them. 11 It became great, even as great as the Prince of the host. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper. 13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, “For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” 14 And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

NOTE: Host (Hebrew word: Saba) doesn’t exclusively mean angelic army. It can refer to a human army as well. In context, the Little Horn is Antiochus Epiphanes IV who oppressed the Jewish army/leadership (Priests/Tribe leaders) and civilians. See below.

Exodus 6:26 English Standard Version 26 These are the Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said: “Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt by their hosts.”

Exodus 12:41 English Standard Version 41 At the end of 430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.

2 Samuel 2:8 King James Version 8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

2 Samuel 3:23 King James Version 23 When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

Daniel 8:23-26 English Standard Version 23 And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their limit, a king of bold face, one who understands riddles, shall arise. 24 His power shall be great—but not by his own power; and he shall cause fearful destruction and shall succeed in what he does, and destroy mighty men and the people who are the saints. 25 By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his own mind he shall become great. Without warning he shall destroy many. And he shall even rise up against the Prince of princes, and he shall be broken—but by no human hand. 26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.”

NOTE: The Prince is considered a chief prince. Not just a regular commander of the army.

Daniel 10:21 English Standard Version 21 But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.

NOTE: Notice that it is emphasized that Michael is a prince.

Daniel 10:13 English Standard Version 13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one (FIRST) of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia,

NOTE: In Daniel 10, the angel is struggling against the Kings of Persia (Cyrus and Cambyses). It isn’t farfetched to have angels fight against humans-i.e. Jacob wrestling with the Angel of the Lord. See Genesis 32:22-32. Now, going back to Daniel 11:21-22, we can see Michael fighting against Antiochus. However, Antiochus defeats Michael, which then resulted in the desecration of the Jewish Temple. Furthermore, the Hebrew word Ehad for ONE  can also be translated as FIRST. See similar examples on how one can be mistranslated as first and vice versa. Gen 10:25, 32:8; Exo 1:15, 18:3; Lev 5:7, 12:8,14:22,15:30; Num 6:11.

Daniel 12:1 English Standard Version   12 “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book

NOTE: At the end of Daniel, we see that Michael is able to come back from his defeat. Now, that Christ has ascended to the Heavenly Throne. Michael and the other angels are able to successfully fight off Satan and his army in Revelation 12-66AD.
