Isaiah 3:12 is not a Prohibition on Female Leadership

Isaiah 3:12 is Not a Prohibition on Female Leadership

Isaiah 3:12 English Standard Version 12 My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.

NOTE: Isaiah 3:12 is not a proof text to be used against Deborah the judge. If Deborah was a judgment to the people, so would the male judges. However, the text never says that at all. First, this is a descriptive text (not a prescriptive text), second, it is a variant (see below). You never make doctrines out of variants. Third, it can be interpreted in another way: Isaiah is using insulting, figurative language to describe the wicked rulers of Israel as childish/immature and feminine/weak. Compare to Isaiah 3:4 for figurative language.

Variants

Isaiah 3:12 Good News Translation 12 Moneylenders oppress my people, and their creditors cheat them. My people, your leaders are misleading you, so that you do not know which way to turn.

Isaiah 3:12 New English Translation 12 Oppressors treat my people cruelly; creditors rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they give you confusing directions.

Isaiah 3:12 Brenton Septuagint Translation O my people, your exactors strip you, and extortioners rule over you: O my people, they that pronounce you blesses lead you astray, and pervert the path of your feet.
