Matthew 16:17-19: Peter's link to Jeremiah 1

                          Matthew 16:17-19: Peter's link to Jeremiah 1

Matthew 16:17-19 English Standard Version 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on (this-houtos) rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Jeremiah 1:18-19 English Standard Version 18 And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

Jeremiah 15:20 English Standard Version 20 And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the Lord.

Isaiah 48:4 English Standard Version 4 Because I know that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead brass,

NOTE 1: In the context of disobedience, this is spiritual callousness. In the context of obedience, it means spiritual boldness.

NOTE 2: This is describing Peter's expression of faith from Heaven. The Greek word Houtos (THIS) should be translated "AS THE SAME" or "this type of person." A similar grammatical construction is from Mark 3:35-Whoever does the will of God is the same as my brother, sister, and mother.

Likewise, whoever demonstrates Peter-like faith will build the Church and the paths to death (works through the Law of Moses/Old Covenant) will not stop it. Another example is also in Luke 20:47, John 15:5, and Revelation 3:5. It describes the main subject's behavior and then a consequence of those who follow that model's behavior. Peter's faith is a gift from God. It will be this kind of faith and boldness (like Jeremiah) to take down the impenetrable gates of Sheol/Hades- First Century Apostate Jerusalem.

Jeremiah's ministry resulted in the Babylonians destroying the First Temple. Peter's ministry resulted in the Romans destroying the Second Temple in 70AD. To the wicked, Peter's faith will be a stumbling block and a face of flint against the opposition. This was true after Christ's ascension. See Isaiah 50:7, Luke 9:51, Ezekiel 3:8-9. Peter, the apostles, and the rest of the Church were an unstoppable force with this kind of faith.
