The Keys of Death and Hades in Revelation
The Keys of Death and Hades in Revelation
In the Book of Revelation, Jesus declares, "I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." (Revelation 1:18). This powerful statement reveals His authority over life, death, and the afterlife. But what exactly are the keys of death and Hades? In this blog, we’ll explore the biblical meaning of these keys and their significance in Preterism.
Revelation 1:18
"and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the KEY of Death and Hades."
NOTE: Jesus has the authority to use the key to open or close Sheol/Hades.
Revelation 3:7
"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the KEY of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens."
NOTE: Similar to Revelation 1:18, Jesus has the authority to open or close Sheol/Hades
Revelation 9:1-3
"And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the KEY to the shaft of the bottomless pit. He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth."
NOTE: Satan is evicted from Heaven. These same events are found in Revelation 12. God allowed Satan to have the key, so he can open up the Abyss and release the wicked spirits to inflict punishment on the disobedient Jews and Romans.
Revelation 20:1-3
"Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the KEY to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while."
NOTE: Notice, the binding angel has the key now. Satan loses his authority and is sent into the Abyss.
Conclusion: Although Revelation has recapitulating themes, we can see a line of progression as well. Considering all the details about the Key of Death and Hades, this shows that Revelation 20 is not going back to the Cross in 30AD-70AD or 26-66AD, but progressing forward from Revelation 19.
