                               8 Reasons why the Premil Memorial Sacrifices should be Discarded

Premil believe that during the 1,000 year reign of Christ (Revelation 20:3-5) believers will go back to OT sacrifices/along with a physical temple for memorial purposes (not atonement) in order to look back at Christ’s sacrificial work on the cross. This is problematic for several reasons:


PROBLEM 1. The words “memorial” and “remembrance” are not found at ALL in Ezekiel 40-48. They have to be conveniently inserted in by the reader.

***Also, in the Old Testament (OT), sacrifices and offerings were already established for memorial/remembrance purposes. To say they are for memorial purposes is to say they are functioning as their original purpose. ***  

The following scripture passages describe memorials:

  • Exodus 3:15; 12:14; 13:9; 17:14; 28:12, 29; 30:16; 39:7  
  • Leviticus 2:2, 16; 5:12; 6:15; 23:24; 24:7  
  • Numbers 5:15, 18, 26; 10:10; 16:40; 31:54  
  • Joshua 4:7; Nehemiah 2:20; Esther 9:28; Psalms 9:6; 135:13; Hosea 12:5; Zechariah 6:14  
  • Matthew 26:13; Mark 14:9; Acts 10:4  

The following scripture passages show what is done in remembrance:

  • Exodus 17:14; Numbers 5:15; Deuteronomy 25:19; 32:26  
  • 2 Samuel 18:18; 1 Kings 17:18; Job 13:12; 18:17  
  • Psalms 6:5; 30:4; 34:16; 38:1; 70:1; 77:6; 83:4; 97:12; 102:12; 112:6  
  • Ecclesiastes 1:11; 2:16; Isaiah 26:8; 43:26; 57:8; Lamentations 3:20  
  • Ezekiel 21:23-24; 23:19, 21; 29;16; Malachi 3:16 
  • Mark 11:21; Luke 1:54; 22:19; John 14:26; Acts 10:31; 1 Corinthians 4:17; 11:24-25;  
  • Philippians 1:3, 1 Thessalonians 3:6; 1 Timothy 4:6; 2 Timothy 1:3, 5, 6; 2:14  
  • Hebrews 10:3, 32, 2 Peter 1:12, 13, 15; 3:1; Jude 1:5, Revelation 16:19  


PROBLEM 2. Hebrews 7:12 states that when there is a change in the Priesthood then the law changes. Therefore, the New Covenant work of Jesus is replaced by a softer version of the Old Covenant.

***Logically, this means that the New Covenant is replaced by a so-called even “better covenant.” In Ezekiel 40-48, we see a new Priesthood under the Order of Zadok and a new sacrificial system. See passages below.***

Hebrews 7:12 English Standard Version 12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well

1 Corinthians 9:21 English Standard Version 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.

Galatians 6:2 English Standard Version 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

 

PROBLEM 3. The Identity of the Prince and His role in Ezekiel 45-46.

*** Possible views for the Prince are Jesus, King David, or an unknown Israeli Ambassador. This is problematic no matter what. It’s basically saying that Jesus’ sacrifice was insufficient and another phase will be needed in order to complete atonement or provide a greater reverence that the cross was already lacking.***

 

PROBLEM 4. The Passover offering replaces the Communion or is eaten side by side.

*** Anything resembling the Old Covenant is going back to types and shadows. See Colossians 2:16-17, Hebrews 10:1. Communion represents the body of Christ-the full substance and the Passover Lamb represents the shadows. It doesn’t make sense for believers to go back to the Old Covenant practices for any reason. Why go from superior to inferior? The author of Hebrews acknowledges that the New Covenant is a better covenant than the old in Hebrews 7:19, 22, 8:6, and 12:24. Galatians 2:4-5 recognizes that the Old Covenant is represented by slavery while the New Covenant is represented by freedom. Why prefer slavery over freedom? Hebrews 8:13 leaves no room for a future manifestation of the Old Covenant. ***

 

PROBLEM 5. Reintroduction to Purification Practices and the Census Tax.

*** The same issues for Problem 4 can be applied to Problem 5. A lot is mentioned about the memorial sacrifices, but it is rarely mentioned that believers will be following new purification practices as stated from Ezekiel 44:15-31. Also, note that census tax from Exodus 30:11-16 returns in Ezekiel 45:10-17, which further supports the fact that this is an atonement ceremony, not a memorial ceremony.***

 

PROBLEM 6-There is NOT ONE commandment to build the Ezekiel Temple.

***Ezekiel 43:10-12, 44:5 only instructs Ezekiel to:  Mark well, measure the plan, make known the pattern, and for the people to repent. Even in the beginning of Ezekiel 40:2, it is described as “a structure like a city.” Therefore, it is not illogical to think that these passages are a figurative description. It makes sense you would use a physical temple’s measurements in order to describe a spiritual temple. How else would you describe a spiritual reality?! The physical measurements are used to help the exiled Jews to understand that this temple was going to be bigger and better than Solomon’s Temple. They would know this since they were involved in the construction of Solomon’s Temple firsthand. Furthermore, in Hebrews, we see references of “a house built with no human hands.” See Hebrews 8:2, 9:11, 9:24. ***

 

PROBLEM 7- Leviticus 16 uses the same Hebrew word for atonement in Ezekiel 45.

***The Hebrew word for atonement is kāp̄ar. This is translated to cover. However, the Premil advocate would say that this simply means to consecrate. They are right. It does mean to set apart, but the burden of proof falls on them to prove that the text solely means that, and not atonement. Like mentioned above, they have to explain why a memorial practice is using a census tax, which was related to atonement. ***

 

PROBLEM 8-Reintroduces physical circumcision and segregation between the Jews and the Gentiles.

*** Ezekiel 44:7-9 emphasizes both flesh and heart needs to be circumcised. Premil advocates would either spiritualize the text or redefine terms as flesh of the spirit in order to save face. This is problematic because this undo’s Christ’s work of breaking the wall of partition between Jews and Gentiles in Ephesians 2:14 and contradicts 1 Corinthians 7:19, Romans 2:29, and Galatians 5:6, 6:15.***
