Daniel 9:24-27: An Detailed Analysis on the 70 Weeks Prophecy

Daniel 9:24-27 English Standard Version (ESV)

24 “Seventy weeks are decreed about your people (Jews) and your holy city (Jerusalem), to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.

25 Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem (458 BC-409 BC) to the coming of an Anointed one (Jesus), a Prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time (409 BC-26AD).

26 And AFTER the sixty-two weeks, an Anointed One (Jesus) shall be cut off (30AD-31AD), but not for himself (Daniel 9:26 KJV). And the PEOPLE (1st Century Non-elect Jews) of the prince (Jesus) who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.

27 And he (Jesus) shall make a (prevailing/strong) covenant with many (Elect Jews) for one week (27AD-34AD), and for half of the week (30AD-31AD) he (Jesus) shall put an END to sacrifice and offering. And on the (height) of abominations (66AD-70AD) shall come ONE (Titus) who brings desolation/destruction), until the decreed end is poured out on the Desolator (1st Century Non-elect Jews who destroyed the city and sanctuary).”

The 6 Eschatological Stipulations= 1) to finish the transgression, 2) to put an end to sin, 3) and to atone for iniquity, 4) to bring in everlasting righteousness,  5) to seal both vision and prophet, 6) and to anoint a most holy place.

 NOTE 1:

1)    To Finish the Transgression: See Matthew 23:32-39; 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16; Revelation 6:11; Genesis 15:16 NIV).

2)    To Put An End to Sin: Hebrews 1:3,10:12; 1 Corinthians 15:55-57

3)    To Atone for Iniquity: Romans 5:8-11

4)    To Bring in an Everlasting Righteousness: Romans 3:19-26

5)    To Seal both Vision and Prophet: Revelation 5:1-14.

6)    To Anoint a Most Holy Place: Ezekiel 45:18-46:17; Hebrew 9:11-12, 23-28.

·         NOTE 2: All the events have to occur at the same time. Some would be quick to say that this is the Cross in 30AD. However, you run into several problems because all these events were not fulfilled at the Cross. First, the Jews continued to rebel until 70AD; second, the NT cannon was not prophetically complete up to this point; third, Jesus died on the Passover. The anointing of the Holy Place is the Day of Atonement ritual. It was not completed up to this point according to the writer of  Hebrew 9:11-12, 23-28. The most plausible fulfillment is in 70AD.

  • The 7 Sevens = 458 BC-409 BC: Artaxerxes’s Commission to Ezra- (See Ezra 7:11-26, Isaiah 44:28, Isaiah 45:13).
  • The 62 Sevens= 409 BC-26AD: The Jews returned to rebuild Jerusalem while facing opposition - (See Nehemiah 4, Ezra 4).
  • The First 3.5 Years of the Last Seven =27AD-31AD: Jesus gets crucified and gets cut off at the 3.5 mark (half of the seven). He will die, but not for HIMSELF-(See Daniel 9:26 KJV and Isaiah 53:8). In verse 26, it says AFTER the 62 weeks indicating that the crucifixion occurred after this time marker. Jesus’ new covenant invitation to the Jews began from 27AD through 34AD. This doesn’t mean the new covenant only lasts 7 years. Also, in verse 27, this further strengthens the fact this is Jesus and not a Premil Anti-Christ. Jesus puts an END to the spiritual affinity of sacrifice for His Elect (Daniel 9:27) while in Daniel 8:11 and 12:11 they are simply taken away by regular men: Antiochus Epiphanes IV and Eleazar the priest respectively .

·         The Last 3.5 Years of the Last Seven=31AD-34AD: The stoning of Stephen resulted in the end of Jesus’ seven year ministry of the Jews as a collective nation. The Gentiles become the focus of the Apostle Paul and the Church. (See Acts 7:54-60, 8:1-40).

·         The PEOPLE of the Prince 66-70AD:The Seventy Sevens Prophecy have been explained in its entirety above. We now shift to the next major events centering on the First Jewish-Roman War. Carefully, keep in mind, that it says the PEOPLE of the Prince. NOT THE PRINCE of the people. The PEOPLE are the 1st Century Jews who crucified Christ-not Jews in general. The 1st Century Jews fought against each other. Josephus recorded several different factions fighting against each other from 66AD-70AD. These factions were John of Gischala and his followers, Eleazar ben Simon and his followers (Zealots), Simon bar Giora and his followers, the Sicarii, and the Idumean militia. They used the Temple as a fortress and battlefield against each other.

  • The Wing (Height) of Abominations=66AD-70AD: Wing is not a part of a building. It is a mistranslation. The term should be translated as peak, height, and/or high point. Similar to the Greek word pterýgion-pinnacle. When the abomination that provokes desolation has reached its full measure-The number of dead saints meeting its complete number- God will send the Destroyer. (See Matthew 23:32 32; 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16; Revelation 6:11; Genesis 15:16 NIV).

·         The One who brings Desolation =66AD-70AD: The One who brings Desolation is Titus Vespasian. See Revelation 9:11, 17:8-11; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; Daniel 7:24. He will bring destruction on the desolate one-1st Century Jews who destroyed the city and the Temple.
