Zechariah 5:1-11: The Flying Scroll and Lady Wickedness

Zechariah 5:1-11: The Flying Scroll and Lady Wickedness

Zechariah 5:1-11 English Standard Version A Vision of a Flying Scroll 5 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll! 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.”3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side. 4 I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”

NOTE: The scroll is the same size as Solomon's outer porch area in 1 Kings 6:3 and Revelation 11:1-2. This scroll is the charge of the covenant curses. This imagery is used again in Revelation 5's scroll for the 70AD destruction of Jerusalem. The writing on both sides is reminiscent of the 10 commandments of God. Alternatively, it can be the inescapable consequences for covenant breakers. The first temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. The greater and truer fulfillment was completed at the destruction of the second temple in 70AD.

A Vision of a Woman in a Basket

5 Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in all the land.” 7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket! 8 And he said, “This is Wickedness.” And he thrust her back into the basket, and thrust down the leaden weight on its opening.

9 Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, two women coming forward! The wind was in their wings. They had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven. 10 Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they taking the basket?” 11 He said to me, “To the land of Shinar, to build a house for it. And when this is prepared, they will set the basket down there on its base.”

NOTE: Once the Southern Kingdom was captured by Babylon, the basket served as a containment unit for the wickedness of the Jewish people-influenced by deceptive spirits (Revelation 18:2). Here, wickedness is personified like the women in Proverbs. Furthermore, this basket is a counterfeit Ark of the Covenant. Instead of two cherubim, there are two winged women with stork-like wings (ceremonially unclean animals). Shinar is another name for Babylon. See Genesis 11:2. This house for the wickedness is the second temple.

This event is fulfilled at the defeat of Satan in Revelation 12:9, Luke 10:18, and Revelation 9:1-3. According to my view, Satan, the red dragon was semi-defeated in 66 AD. This  occurred in Revelation 12. It is represented by the Roman general, Cestius Gallus fighting off the Jews and losing to them in a shameful manner. The Jews established the Judean Provisional Government-a self-appointed authority. See Revelation 17:12-14.

The defeat of Rome is represented by one of the heads having a fatal wound in Revelation 13:3. This wounded head was Emperor Nero's military defeat. As a result, he promoted a Father and Son as co-generals: Vespasian and Titus. These co-generals received newfound authority to squash the Jewish resistance. See Revelation 13:4-8.

In Revelation 9:1-3, we see more of the spiritual dimension of the same circumstances. We see Satan open up the Zechariah 5 basket of wickedness/counterfeit Ark of the Covenant/ bottomless pit/Abyss. This releases all the evil spirits, which influences both Jews and Romans into killing each other. A similar idea can be found in 2 Chronicles 20:22-26. Jesus attempted to clean the temple twice in accordance to Leviticus 14:33-57, but its wickedness was too cancerous to be stopped. See Matthew 12:43-45.
