Zechariah 6:1-17 The Horsemen and Crown

Zechariah 6:1-17 The Horsemen and Crown

Zechariah 6

English Standard Version

6 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, four chariots came out from between two mountains. And the mountains were mountains of bronze. 2 The first chariot had red horses, the second black horses, 3 the third white horses, and the fourth chariot dappled horses—all of them strong.4 Then I answered and said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” 5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are going out to the four winds of heaven, after presenting themselves before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The chariot with the black horses goes toward the north country, the white ones go after them, and the dappled ones go toward the south country.” 7 When the strong horses came out, they were impatient to go and patrol the earth. And he said, “Go, patrol the earth.” So they patrolled the earth. 8 Then he cried to me, “Behold, those who go toward the north country have set my Spirit at rest in the north country.”

NOTE: I believe the two bronze/brass mountains is the Mount of Olives mentioned in Zechariah 14:4-5. God is sending his spiritual armies as an instrument of judgment.  The North country and South country are Babylon and Egypt respectively. This is a double fulfillment. In one way, this is about the destruction of Babylon in Daniel 5:30-31 and Egypt in Daniel 11:42-43. The red horses represent bloodshed,  the black horses represent economic scarcity, the white horses represent conquest/establishment of a new authority, and the dappled-spotted horses represent Death/Illness.

Its greater and truer fulfillment is during 66AD-70AD. We see the four Roman legions carrying out  judgment on first century Apostate Jerusalem- The Spiritual Babylon (Revelation 17:5) and Egypt (Revelation 11:8). These four legions are XII Fulminata, XV Apollinaris, V Macedonica, and X Fretensis. Now, in Revelation 6, we no longer see the legions being the main focus, but the actual kings who leads them into the Jerusalem war. These Four Kings are Herod Agrippa II of Chalcis, Sohaemus of Emesa, Malichus II of Arabia, and Antiochus (known as Gaius) of Samosata.

Zechariah 14:4-5

English Standard Version

4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be SPLIT IN TWO from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

The Crown and the Temple

9 And the word of the Lord came to me: 10 “Take from the exiles Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon, and go the same day to the house of Josiah, the son of Zephaniah. 11 Take from them silver and gold, and make a crown, and set it on the head of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12 And say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: for he shall branch out from his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord. 13 It is he who shall build the temple of the Lord and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. And there shall be a priest on his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”’ 14 And the crown shall be in the temple of the Lord as a reminder to Helem,Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah.

15 “And those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of the Lord. And you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

NOTE: Here we see a group of exiled Jews (from Babylon) who brought gold and silver to assist the Jews under Zerubbabel. Heldai/Helem means one of the Land, Tobijah means Yahweh is good , and Jedaiah means the one who knows Yahweh. Hen means Grace, which is another name for Josiah- God heals. Or grace is extended to the son of Zephaniah.

The gold and silver are used to make a crown for Joshua-Yahweh is salvation, son of Jehozadak- Yahweh has justified.  He is the current High Priest. This is the foreshadowing of Jesus' exaltation ceremony in Heaven as King and High Priest simultaneously. Jesus is called Branch because He is the fulfillment of the Root of Jesus. The One who will build, unify, and heal New Covenant Israel of their sins.
